Purgatory Cellars, the high-end wine line of White Owl Winery, has won its first medal in the 18th Annual New World International Wine Competition held March 9 and 10 in Ontario, California.
“We’re delighted and very pleased,” said winery founder Joy Neighbors. “Although we have over 150 international medals for our White Owl wines, this is our first award for our Purgatory Cellars line. And, since this is the only wine we entered in this competition, we’re thrilled that it placed.”
The wine that took the Bronze medal for Purgatory Cellars was Persimmon Solera. This was the only wine awarded in its category.
“This competition is different than most,” Neighbors explained. “All of the wines are judged by price category against others of its type. It’s the only competition in the country that puts the best wines from each price class against each other. It truly is a competition.”
The New World International Wine Competition is one of the top ten wine competitions in the U.S. In this competition, the wines are judged “double blind.” That means that the judges do not know the identity of the wines they are judging and are never given a list of entered wines.
Over 2,000 wines from the U.S., Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Australia and South Africa were evaluated by 46 judges in this event. The judging panel was comprised of wine makers, wine educators, wine writers and other wine professionals.
“This is just the beginning for Purgatory Cellars!” Neighbors said. “We want everyone to realize that wonderful, award-winning high-end wines can and do come from Illinois!
